Gov. Jay Nixon visits with students from the linemen-training program at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley following his announcement of the Show Me JOBS initiative on that campus.
During these difficult economic times, Missouri faces historic challenges. The national economic crisis has hit our state hard, and too many families are struggling to make ends meet. To turn this economy around, Gov. Jay Nixon is committed to reaching across party lines to put Missouri families first.
Getting Missourians back to work is Gov. Nixon’s top priority. Under his Show Me JOBS Initiative, we will use a combination of small-business loans, strategic tax credits and other incentives to keep good-paying jobs here in Missouri – and to attract the high-quality, high-tech jobs of the future to our state. Missouri is home to the most productive, most innovative workers in the country. By focusing on job training and workforce development, we’ll make sure they get back on the job.
To get our economy back on track, Gov. Nixon also knows we must ensure that Missouri has a healthy and educated workforce – a workforce ready to compete for 21st-century jobs. That’s why Gov. Nixon believes we must take real steps to reduce the number of uninsured Missourians, ensure that all children have access to medical coverage and drive down the cost of health care for families. And we must do more to ensure that all middle-class students know that the dream of a four-year degree is within reach.
As Missouri families make tough decisions and look for ways to tighten their belts, Gov. Nixon believes state government must do the same. Under Gov. Nixon’s leadership, state officials will conduct a top-to-bottom performance review of every department, program and agency to find ways to make government smaller, more efficient and more responsive to the needs of Missouri families. By increasing efficiency and instilling the right priorities across state government, we will have additional resources to create jobs, make health care more accessible and help middle-class families in this turbulent economy. This entire process must take place openly, transparently and with accountability to the people.
The challenges Missouri faces are historic. But by taking historic, bipartisan action, Gov. Nixon knows that we can begin to turn things around. Together, we will move Missouri forward.
